Badly Drawn Horse: Trend Horses, Chester, Galileo...

Published: Fri, 05/09/14

Good morning BDH'ers

Chester enters it's third and final day today so it's worth taking a quick squint at my Chester post from Wednesday.

Aidan O'Brien got himself on the score-sheet yesterday with ORCHESTRA and it is safe to say that particular horse was a prime fit on the trends...

ORCHESTRA - Ridden by Ryan Moore | First time out for season | sired by Galileo in a 3yo non-handicap contest - Job done!

Indeed Galileo had a decent day yesterday. He had three of his progeny running for him and they finished first and second in the Huxley Stakes (Noble Mission & Telescope) and had the aforementioned Orchestra winning the Chester Vase. I'm sure the mighty sire gave a nod of approval to his three sons from his luxury stud headquarters!! "Send some mares through, I feel like celebrating!!"

Until yesterday it had been the Galileo 3yo's that had cleaned up at Chester so it was good to see a couple of the 'older' generation do the business in the Huxley Stakes. That is something for us to note going forward.

The front-runners have maybe been finding it a little bit difficult to land solid blows as we have seen deteriorating conditions (my stats suggested they wouldn't be as potent as the ground softened) but they have still fired in four winners (Mukhmal, Noble Mission, Stellar Express and Swan Song) and although some of them did share the lead they would be classed as front-runners.

Softening ground does make it that bit more difficult to go from the front at Chester but it is a solid angle that is still over-looked.

One of those front-running winners, NOBLE MISSION, is a horse in focus on my BDH Trend Horses page. This is a free resource that I will be updating as we shimmy further into the season.

My trends had noted that he was...

  • Best on Good or Softer
  • Had strong form in April & May
  • Strong form in fields of 7 or less
Those three credentials were met yesterday and he duly obliged.

The only 'concern' I had was that he had yet to win going Left-Handed. However, with the other three angles in his favour AND the fact he was by Galileo it was easy to overlook that potential LH/RH bias. For what it is worth I do still think he is marginally more comfortable going the other way round.

I will be adding more Trend Horses to this page as the season progresses so do make sure you keep an eye on the BDH Trend Horses page.
